El Paso Locomotive FC has signed local goalkeeper Marco Canales for the remainder of the 2022 USL Championship season, the club announced on Thursday, August 4.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, in keeping with club policy, and the signing is still subject to approval from the league and the federation.

Canales, a 20-year-old El Paso native, is no stranger to the team. He first joined Locomotive on loan from FC Juarez Bravos in April of the 2021 season. During that year he trained under Locomotive goalkeeper coach JC Garzon and gained experience working within the club's environment.

Head coach and Technical Director John Hutchinson said Canales has been part of the group throughout the current campaign. "Marco has been training with us all season and has had very good growth in training," Hutchinson said. He explained that the goalkeeper was added to give the squad more depth at the position through the end of the season. "He has shown great character in training and we will be looking for that to continue," Hutchinson added.

Canales graduated from Cathedral High School in El Paso before moving to FC Juarez. While with Locomotive's sister club, he helped guide the Bravos' third-division affiliate to an unprecedented win streak and a championship run.

According to the club's transaction details, Canales was born on August 8, 2001, and is listed at 5 feet 11 inches and 173 pounds. His surname is pronounced kuh-NAL-less, and his hometown is El Paso, Texas.

Locomotive's next match is a road game against Monterey Bay F.C. on Saturday, August 6, the club's first visit to Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, California. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The team then returns to Southwest University Park on Saturday, August 20, to host Landon Donovan and the San Diego Loyal at 7:30 p.m. MT. Tickets are available at eplocomotivefc.com or by calling 915-235-GOAL, and the evening will include a fireworks show after the match.
