London Police Launch Intensive Manhunt for Escaped Prisoner

Detectives are searching the capital for a 38-year-old man who forced his way out of a Lewisham medical unit, prompting warnings for residents to avoid contact.

A high-stakes search operation has intensified across London as authorities work to locate a prisoner who escaped from a medical facility in the south-east of the city. The situation has created a palpable tension between the need to recover the fugitive quickly and the public's anxiety over his potential danger. Metropolitan Police have declared the individual a significant risk, urging residents to remain vigilant while avoiding direct interaction with the man.

The escape occurred shortly after 4pm on Friday, October 16, when the detainee forced his way out of a health unit in Lewisham. He was last confirmed to be in that area at approximately 4.10pm. By the time police issued their initial statement on Saturday, they had determined he was heading toward Catford. The speed of his disappearance has forced law enforcement to widen their net, treating the entire capital as a potential hiding spot rather than limiting the search to the immediate vicinity of the facility.

The individual at the center of this operation is Anthony Lloyd, a 38-year-old white man. Officers describe him as having a medium build and standing about 5ft 8in tall. He has short dark hair. When he left the facility, he was wearing a grey-blue T-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms, and white trainers. These specific clothing details are now key identifiers for the public and for the officers combing through the streets.

Lloyd’s path to the medical facility began with a conviction in 2025. He was found guilty of actual bodily harm in an incident that took place in Nottinghamshire. That specific crime involved three emergency services workers. Following his sentencing, he received a 12-month custodial term and was initially held in prison. In September, his circumstances changed when he was transferred to the Lewisham medical unit, a move that likely stemmed from health needs, though the specific medical condition was not detailed in the release.

Detective Superintendent Melanie Pressley is leading the ongoing inquiry. She emphasized the urgency of the situation in a public appeal, noting that the team is conducting significant inquiries to return Lloyd to custody. Her primary concern is the dual threat he presents. She stated that he poses a risk both to his own safety and to the general public. This assessment drives the tactical decision to keep the public at a distance rather than encouraging them to try and stop him themselves.

The stakes extend beyond the immediate boundaries of London. Police have identified that Lloyd has personal or geographical links to several other regions. These connections include Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Merseyside. This network of links suggests that if he attempts to flee the capital, he may have known locations or contacts in these areas to help him stay hidden.

For those who believe they have seen the man, the instructions are clear. The public has been advised not to approach him under any circumstances. Instead, witnesses should call 999 immediately to report his location. Pressley appealed for any information, no matter how minor, to be passed on to authorities as a matter of urgency. The reference number CAD4739/23Oct should be quoted when reporting sightings to ensure the information reaches the correct investigative team.
