Anthropic Backers See Billions in Gains Ahead of Potential 2026 IPO

Early investors and late-stage venture firms have accumulated massive valuations on their Anthropic stakes, with some holdings worth billions before the company goes public.

Anthropic is on the verge of a historic public listing that could value the artificial intelligence company at up to $2 trillion this year. Such a milestone would create significant financial gains for the network of venture capitalists and early backers who supported the firm through its growth. Even before the official stock market debut, the private market valuation of $965 billion has already transformed the stakes held by these investors into multi-billion dollar positions. According to data from Bloomberg, the current worth of these holdings reflects the rapid appreciation of the AI lab since its inception.

One of the most notable individual investors is Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A funding round in 2021, a time when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. Since then, his position has grown in significance relative to the company’s overall expansion. Today, Schmidt retains ownership of approximately one percent of Anthropic. At the current private market price, this modest percentage equates to a stake worth nearly $10 billion, illustrating the substantial return on his early commitment.

Late-stage institutional investors have also reaped heavy returns as the company’s valuation scaled. Iconiq, a prominent investment firm, issued a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. This massive capital injection has since appreciated to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double again if the company achieves its target valuation during the upcoming initial public offering.

Menlo Ventures has maintained a deep financial relationship with the AI lab, leading its Series D funding round. Over time, the venture capital firm has invested more than $1 billion into Anthropic. This sustained commitment has resulted in a current stake valued at $14 billion. Similarly, Sequoia, another renowned venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year. They backed the company when it was already valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured approximately one percent ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment in a matter of months.

Smaller firms and celebrity-led funds have also seen their positions grow exponentially. Sound Ventures, a fund launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in Anthropic’s Series C round in 2023. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its position. Although Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm, the fund’s stake in Anthropic now holds a value in the billions. This growth highlights how even mid-round entries can yield significant returns in the high-growth AI sector.

Spark Capital presents one of the most dramatic examples of wealth creation among Anthropic’s backers. It is the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at the company. Spark Capital invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round that Sound Ventures joined. At that specific point in time, Anthropic was valued at $5 billion. Since then, that initial investment has ballooned more than ninetyfold. The position is now worth approximately $7 billion, a testament to the explosive trajectory of the AI industry.

The context of these valuations highlights the intense competition among investors to secure a piece of the leading AI labs. The journey from a $461 million valuation in 2021 to a projected $2 trillion public listing in 2026 is a rare feat in the technology sector. These figures suggest that the IPO will not only provide liquidity for early backers but also signal a broader confidence in the sustainability and growth of generative AI technologies. For Texas and South Central business leaders, this trend underscores the expanding influence of AI infrastructure on regional economic dynamics.

Looking ahead, the market will closely watch the actual pricing of the IPO to see if the $2 trillion target is met. If realized, the windfall for investors like Schmidt, Iconiq, and Menlo Ventures will be even more pronounced. The success of this listing will likely set a new benchmark for future AI startups seeking capital. As the company prepares for its public debut, the focus remains on how these massive gains will be distributed and whether they will fuel further investment in the AI ecosystem.
